Generally speaking, someone seeks the help of a therapist because of a particular problem, like worries that seem out of control or a sadness that you just can’t shake. Maybe a relationship isn’t working out the way you think it should or a loneliness that’s been there for a long time has become harder to live with. Have you been eating to soothe yourself? Drinking too much to calm the nerves or chase away the blues? Have concerns about sex or sexuality? Sometimes, even positive and exciting life changes can bring some sleepless nights.
In situations like these, talking with friends and family might not seem like enough or might not even be an option. It’s probably time to meet with someone trained to help. Therapy offers a combination of privacy, objectivity, and compassion to help you look closely at what you’re experiencing. All of your feelings are important. Even the ones that are unpleasant or difficult to be with. The trick is to figure out how they fit into your life so they don’t take over your life.
Most people who’ve been in therapy will agree that it isn’t exactly fun, but that it does a world of good. Alleviation of symptoms like depression and anxiety is often just the tip of the iceberg. Therapy can also bring about big changes in the way you see the world you live in and the way you live in it. You may find yourself feeling more alive and creative and more willing and able to share yourself with others. You may even discover parts of yourself you didn’t know were there.
